A Nightingale Sang

Egg tempera and gold leaf on oak panel

30cm x 25cm x 1cm

In this painting, a nightingale releases its song into the top corner, while a robin cocks its head to listen. The garden birds, also including a chaffinch, coal tit and sparrow are painted against a burnished gold background, recalling Martin Schongauer's masterpiece, the Madonna in the Rose Garden.
