Fish

Egg tempera and gold leaf on poplar

12cm x 12cm x 2.2cm

This painting takes its inspiration from a variety of sources, including Paul Klee's 'The Golden Fish', Roman mosaics and Japanese paintings of carp.

The fish are painted over gold leaf and the paint layers are scratched through to reveal the gold around the scales. For the bellies of the fish and fins of the eel a very thin veil of paint was applied over gold leaf to create a perlescent effect.
